KingHasan Team Pays a Tribute to MUKESH

YESTERYEAR LEGEND

One of the stars in the golden era of hindi film music was Mukesh. His voice didn’t have the versatility that could change from one actor to another, but it was a beautiful blend of sadness, innocence and melody.

Mukesh Chand Mathur (22 July 1923, Delhi, British India – 27 August 1976 Detroit, USA)

Mukesh was the sixth in a family of ten children. Mukesh left school after the 10th grade and worked for a short time for the Delhi Department of Public Works.

Mukesh and Sarla Trivedi (1928 –2008) eloped and got married in a temple. Sarla was from a wealthy Gujarati Brahmin family. Everyone made dire predictions of unhappy days and divorce; but both weathered the lean days and celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary on  22 July 1976, five days before his departure for the U.S.A. on 27 July 1976. The couple had five children as Rita,Nitin (playback singer), Nalini(d. 1978), Mohnish (Taboo - nick name) and Namrata (Amrita). He is the grandfather of actor, Neil Nitin Mukesh.

Mukesh was noticed by Motilal(a distant relative of Mukesh) when he sang at his sister’s wedding. Motilal brought him to Bombay. He got his break as a playback singer in 1945 with the film Pehli Nazar . The first song he sang for a Hindi film was Dil Jalta Hai to Jalne de, which was filmed on Motilal. Mukesh was a fan of K L Sehgal and initially emulated him.
Mukesh also tried and make it as a singing star. Mashuqa (1953) with Suraiya and Anuraag (1956) with Usha Kiran both failed at the box-office. He also did a small role as a tangewala enacting his own song - “Chhoti si ye Zindgani” in Aah (1953)

Mukesh is best known as the voice (playback) of Raj Kapoor, but he has sung maximum songs for Manoj Kumar.

On 27th August 1976, Mukesh breathed his last in Detroit when he was there for a concert. Cried Raj Kapoor - Meri awaaz kho gayi, Main goonga ho gaya hun (I have lost my voice, I am dumb now). Mukesh was a great human being too, always encouraging newcomers and often singing without fee for music directors who couldn’t afford him.
He received Filmfare awards for …
- Sab kuchh seekha, Anari (1959)
- Sab se bada nadaan,Pehchan (1970)
- Jai bolo beimaan ki, Beimaan (1972)
- Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein, Kabhi Kabhi (1976..after death).

Today after more than three decades his fans are as much enchanted by Mukesh’s voice as they were during that golden era.

Our Idol Raja Hasan also is a big fan of Mukesh ji and pays tribute with one of his favourite numbers of mukesh ji’s “Teri Yaad Dil Se Bhoolane Chala Hun”
